The End of Summer Blues

Labor Day has come and gone. It still feels very much like summer here, but I know it’s not.
I even took today off work to give myself the illusion that summer is stretching out for 24 more precious hours. But tomorrow, I get up at 5:30 and then it’s back to the salt mines.

I’ve always loved fall, and when I was a kid, I always looked forward to going back to school. I loved stocking up on new notebooks, folders and pens, and buying a new pair of back-to-school shoes. I loved when the fall clothes appeared in the stores (and in the Sears and Penneys catalogs that faithfully showed up in our mailbox.) To this day, my favorite colors are the rich, deep hues of fall – maple leaf red, eggplant, forest green, burnished gold, chocolate brown. I actually got excited about my new class schedule, too – but then I was a bit of a nerd.

So I ought to feel happy right now, but it just feels like summer flew by and I never really jumped in and savored it. At the onset of summer, I was still deeply depressed over my broken relationship, and only now that summer’s over do I feel dry-eyed and optimistic again. (To which end, I’ve leapt into the murky waters of on-line dating again, even going so far as to post a new pic on, showing off my newly auburn hair.) So we’ll see what develops.
